서울대 예술복합연구동은 미술대학과 음악대학이 함께 사용하는 건물로 1, 2층에는 대중적인 문화공간이 자리하고 3, 4층에는 전문적인 실습공간이 있습니다. 스틸커튼월을 적용한 다각형 구조의 건축물은 다양한 크기의 유리조각들이 모여서 하나의 조형성을 이룹니다. 외부는 테라코타와 유리, 복합패널로 구성되어 있고, 내부는 노출콘크리트와 유리로 마감되어 있습니다.

예술복합연구동은 건축 조각(mass)들이 서로 융합(convergence)하여 형태를 이룬 건축 특성 때문에 다양한 층과 방향에서 사람들이 유입됩니다. 우리는 이러한 복잡한 동선을 보다 쉽고, 직관적으로 인지할 수 있도록 웨이파인딩 계획을 세웠습니다. 

서울대 김경선교수 연구팀과 함께 진입 동선에 따른 수평적, 수직적 길찾기 시스템(Wayfinding system)을 계획하였습니다. 노출 콘크리트로 거칠게 마감된 벽과 바닥, 예각의 유리조각들로 덮인 포디움은 내부공간을 건조하고 차가운 이미지로 느낄 수 있게 합니다. 이런 공간의 분위기를 보완하기 위해서 사인디자인은 과감한 컬러를 사용하고 단순하면서도 공간과 조화를 이룰 수 있는 그래픽 디자인을 적용하였습니다. 무심한 듯 벽에 기대놓은 사인은 회색 공간과 대비되는 레몬옐로우 컬러를 사용함으로써 방문객의 시선을 자연스럽게 사로잡고 공간에 활력을 불어넣습니다. 서체(typographic design), 픽토그램(pictogram), 맵(map)은 스텐실(stencil)기법으로 표현하여 거친 노출콘크리트 공간에 완성미를 갖추었습니다.

이러한 사인시스템의 형태와 색채, 그래픽요소는 공간의 경직성과 긴장감을 해소시키며 단순히 길찾기 역할만이 아닌 공간의 단점을 보완하고 활력을 주는 요소(Small Visual Point)로써 공간과 상호작용하여 새로운 예술복합연구동만의 감성과 문화를 느낄 수 있게 합니다.

The Seoul National University Arts Research Institute is a shared-use facility for the College of Fine Arts and the College of Music. The 1st and 2nd floors are used as a space for the arts in pop culture, and the 3rd and 4th floors are used as a space for practicum. The facility was designed around the concept of a ‘Steel Curtain Wall’ with an irregular steel frame combined with glass to form a single polygonal structure. The exterior finishing materials consist of terracotta and glass composite panels, and the interior is finished with rough, exposed concrete and glass.

Due to the unique structural form, which resembles a convergence of masses, the flow of movement through the space intersects across various levels and in varying directions. Our goal was to develop a wayfinding strategy that makes navigating this complex space simple and intuitive. A research team from the University was assigned to collaborate with us as we worked to find the best solution.

The rough finish on the bare concrete walls and floors, along with the acutely shaped glass fragments can give the appearance of a stale and cold environment. To overcome this negative imagery, we based our graphic design applications in bold colors that harmoniously-contrast within the space. The signage that leans against a bare concrete wall was presented in a lemon-yellow color to naturally draw attention to itself and to give the environment a boost of energy and liveliness. Stencil typeface was used in the typographic design, pictograms, and maps to give the rough concrete surfaces a finished look.

The appearance, colors, and graphic elements used in this signage system not only serves a wayfinding purpose, but also serves as an energizing element (small visual point) in a non-traditional environment; making the new Arts Research Institute an interactive space that evokes emotion and culture.
